7 Steps to Launching a Tremendous New Year

Can you believe 2019 is right around the corner? Neither can I! Time sure flies (whether you’re having fun or not).

I was recently reminded of some words of wisdom particularly when you are looking at a daunting goal. Start working on that daunting goal even if it takes years to accomplish. After all, the time will go by anyway.

That’s so true, isn’t it? So, let’s make 2019 a tremendous year!

7 Steps to Launching a Tremendous New Year

  1. Decide what it is that you want.

That may sound pretty elementary, but you’ll never reach a goal unless you know exactly what it is that you want.

Get a clear vision. Picture it; write it down; be very specific.

  2. Eat healthy.

This is not about dieting. It’s about fueling your body to be the best it can be. The only way to leave sluggishness and fatigue behind is to feed your physical body healthy foods.

Develop the mindset of “eating to live” rather than “living to eat”.

  3. Move your body.

I wish I could tell you that the human body doesn’t need exercise, but it does. We don’t have to train for a marathon but we do have to move.

Depending on where you are physically, start making small changes to get you moving. Walk more, take the stairs, start a stretching program; just do more than you are doing now.

Getting our body more physically fit gives us more energy and stimulates our endorphins making us happier beings.

(You should see your doctor before starting an exercise program.)

  4. Set realistic goals.

Yes, we do want to stretch for our goals, but we are also motivated by achievement, so be realistic.

There’s no way one will lose 100 pounds in a month so don’t set that type of goal. You can lose 2- 5 pounds in a month; that’s a realistic goal.

  5. Break your goal down into action steps.

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Goals are the same way. We can’t just say that we are going to lose “X” number of pounds without an action plan.

Decide how you are going to do that. Eating a certain number of calories per day, exercising, using portion sizes, meal planning and the action steps can go on.

  6. Track your progress.

I had a boss once who always said “What is expected must be inspected to make it happen.” He was absolutely right!

If weight loss is your goal, track your progress. Track what you eat each day. Track how much you move each day. And lastly, track the scales, but once a week or once a month is usually best. Daily weighing often sabotages weight loss because our weight naturally fluctuates daily.

  7. Practice gratitude.

This should probably be the first on the list. So often we forget that we have much for which to be grateful.

I recommend this practice whether you set goals or not. Gratitude alone is a great way to improve every year, month, week and day!

Makes this a DAILY HABIT! It will change your life.

I’m looking forward to the new year! I hope you are, too. Some people break their annual goals into quarterly and/or month goals to better track their progress and determine their action steps. Do what works for you!

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Life in the Home Office

When I left my office job to work from home, my regional manager "worried" that I would not like working from home for the lack of socializing.  I know, that's funny if you know me, right!

This November will be three years of working from home. And... I love it! Not only do I work (as in a job) from home, but I've picked up sewing and writing.  You know about the writing as I blog every week and you probably know about the sewing as I have highlighted some sewing on the blog.

Now, I'm writing books.  A year or so ago I wrote a non-fiction book so I would have a manuscript to take to a writing conference.  The conference never happened so I wound up tabling the book.  Then last year, I accepted a challenge to write a novel.  I wrote a book in two months.  It was so much fun!

So when it was time to set goals for the new year, one was to publish a couple of books.  I don't know if I'll get two books published this year or not, but one will be coming out soon this summer or early fall.

The story is about a nurse who is struggling with her idea of God.  Of course, she has a little mystery thriller in the mix, but the real matter is how our Savior pursues her.  I hope to have a couple more books in that series next year.

Let all that you do be done in love.

7 Ways to Transform Your Thinking

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  Philippians 4:8

We all make choices in life.  We choose every day when we will get up; what we wear; who we will associate with.

Some things we don’t necessarily choose are various thoughts that we think, BUT we DO choose what to do with those thoughts.  We also choose what we watch or read that may contribute to those thoughts.

If you want to transform your thinking, here are 7 things you can do:

1.       Choose to read uplifting books, magazines, posts and/or topics.

2.       Choose to watch clean entertainment.

3.       Choose to be with people who encourage you and others.

4.       Spend time in the Bible.

5.       Pray, asking God to guide you in the above choices.

6.       Practice only saying positive and encouraging things to others.

7.       Focus on the Truth – Jesus.

We can consciously choose so much of what we give our minds access.  Paul cuts to the chase when he tells us to think on what’s true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable and excellent.

This is not “Pollyanna” thinking.  We all know bad things happen.  We all know that sometimes we are surprised by something we see or hear.  But the things we choose to mull over and meditate on are definitely of our choosing.  So, if and only if, it’s worthy of praise, thing on these things!

Put Your Dreams and Goals Before You

Good Monday morning to you this first day of 2018!

Well, here we are at the beginning of a new year.  It always feels like the slate is clean and it’s time to plan dreams and goals for this year.  So what are your dreams and goals for 2018?  Are you starting something new? Do you have big plans?  I do.

Let me mention just a few of my dreams and goals for 2018.

1.      Advance my writing – specifically growing my blog audience

2.      Complete 2 books and publish them

3.      Minimalize my house for next year’s move

4.      Finish reading the Bible all the way through

Notice, I did not say “resolution”, I said dreams and goals.  A few years ago I started making vision boards.  The first year I did it I was blown away be all the things that actually happened.  NO, I don’t think the stars aligned to make my dreams come true that year.  What I noticed is that with the vision board front and center, I thought about my goals daily and I did something to work for them.

Habakkuk 2:2 says,  And the Lord answered me:

“Write the vision;

make it plain on tablets,

so he may run who reads it.”

Setting my 2018 dreams and goals in front of me help me see the written vision made plain so I might run to it. That’s what a vision board does for me.  I like to use this rather than resolutions in a notebook.

Everyone knows that most resolutions end before the month of January does.  So why waste your time making resolutions.  Why not set your dreams and goals before you in a way that you can plainly see them and then run toward your dreams and goals.

If you want to accomplish your goals,

1. put them in front of you so you can see them every day

2. make them measurable

3. and make them realistic but with just a little stretch.

May your 2018 dreams and goals come true!  I know they can with some prayer and hard work.

Happy New Year!
